Making healthy food choices can lower one's risk of heart disease and the risk of developing some types of cancer, and can help one maintain their weight within a healthy range. From conducting scientific research to educating about health, people in the field of public health work to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy. That can mean vaccinating children and adults to prevent the spread of disease.

Other times, an environmental trigger can cause illness in a person who has an increased genetic risk of a particular disease. Good physical health can work in tandem with mental health to improve a person’s overall quality of life. However, despite this expenditure, people in the U.S. have a lower life expectancy than people in other developed countries. This is due to a variety of factors, including access to healthcare and lifestyle choices.

It is important to approach “health” as a whole, rather than as a series of separate factors. All types of health are linked, and people should aim for overall well-being and balance as the keys to good health. A person who has good physical health is likely to have bodily functions and processes working at their peak. Among communicable diseases, both viral and bacterial, AIDS/HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria are the most common, causing millions of deaths every year. Mental state, as measured by behaviour, is deemed unsound. Some say that a person is mentally healthy if he or she is able to function reasonably well and is emotionally and behaviorally stable. Physical condition and health are not synonymous terms.

There is a perceived tension between the need for transparency on the one hand and such issues as patient confidentiality and the possible exploitation of information for commercial gain on the other. Mental health is not just the absence of mental illness. Lifestyle choices are contributing factors to poor health in many cases. These include smoking cigarettes, and can also include a poor diet, whether it is overeating or an overly constrictive diet.

Physical Activity

The impact of these changes to Healthy People will be determined in the coming years. Public health works to track disease outbreaks, prevent injuries and shed light on why some of us are more likely to suffer from poor health than others. The many facets of public health include speaking out for laws that promote smoke-free indoor air and seatbelts, spreading the word about ways to stay healthy and giving science-based solutions to problems. While a doctor treats people who are sick, those of us working in public health try to prevent people from getting sick or injured in the first place.
